Chrystal Dunninger Museum Page 4
Now here is someone important. This is one of Chrystal and Dunninger's pomeranian dogs. It won a ribbon from the Ladies Kennel Club of Canada. The first of many prizes Chrystal's dogs would win. In 1931, her pomeranian puppy won first prize and best puppy at Westminster. This one was named Daffy. They had at least two, possibly more. |
Guess who got stuck carrying Daffy sometimes? |
They also had some fun posing Daffy as a medium, with a funny headdress and crystal ball. |
Now here is a very interesting gathering. Here are Chrystal, Dunninger's parents, and little Harry Jr. photographed by Dunninger no doubt. Fascinating to see Dunninger's parents. They were German immigrants, Dunninger's father was a tailor. Maybe that's where Dunninger got his great sense of style. |
It's April of 1928, and guess who Chrystal and Dunninger are hanging out with? Bessie Houdini. Yes, that one. Bessie gave Dunninger a lot of Houdini's stuff after his death. Dunninger and Houdini had been friends. |
The same month, on April 28, according to news clippings quoting Chrystal, Chrystal and Dunninger "married." She said Dunninger brought champagne and a Bible, she baked a cake and iced it white, and they exchanged vows. In another clipping she stated it was 1929, so it was one of those two years. This is interesting because later, when Chrystal and Dunninger parted ways, he claimed they had never been married. Who knows the truth? Only them. At this time, they were still performing together. Ah, true love. |
In 1930 the couple traveled to Florida and Cuba and took a lot of photos to remember the trip. |
A year later, Chrystal inscribes a photograph of herself and their adorable pomeranian to Dunninger: "Two Daffys for Joe dear from your Chrystal 1931." Another photo of the same era is inscribed, "Guess what I am thinking? Yes? Yes, you're right. Love, Chrystal." That's cute! I'll have to use that sometime. |
This is the one inscribed Two Daffys.
This one is just too cute to leave out!
And here is the one inscribed "Yes!"
Now here's something fun. Chrystal and Dunninger cruised on the Aquitania in July 1931, and visited Bermuda. They bought a souvenir, a sailor doll, which I have! You'll see it as we tour the museum. The doll has 1929 written on his cap, so maybe there's something fishy about my date. Just remember, admission is free. Here is a photo of Dunninger on deck, and a shot of the Aquitania. |
